UNISON members attend Mental Health in the Workplace Conference

Four members of UNISON Essex Branch attended the first Mental Health in the Workplace Conference organised by Colchester Trades Council.

The conference took place on 12 October 2019 to coincide with World Mental Health Day.  44 tickets were booked and 10 speakers were scheduled to attend. Four members of UNISON Essex were at the Conference: Branch Secretary Jane Dabbs, Health and Safety Officer Richard Bond, and members Shaun and Joseph, both of whom have attended UNISON conferences on behalf of the branch.

UNISON Essex are affiliated to Colchester Trades Council and were pleased that some of our members could benefit from the event.

Attendees heard from a variety of speakers including representatives from other unions (GMB and PCS), together with speakers on mental health in specific groups such as farmers and overseas students.

Following the event, UNISON Essex member Shaun said, “I felt that the mix of sessions stayed relevant without ever getting too difficult emotionally.  It was excellent to meet people from differing careers but so much shared ground.”

Feedback for the event was positive with 75% of evaluation forms completed rating the event as 5/5 and 25% 4/5, and comments praising the speakers as “fantastic,” “interesting” and “diverse and inspiring.”

Colchester Trades Council are keen to build on the success of this event and perhaps make the Conference an annual event timed to coincide with World Mental Health Week.
